Wolves (captive)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The gray wolf Canis lupus is one of the most adaptable of mammals.   It is found in a huge variety of habitats (deserts through forests to Arctic tundra) throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, although their populations have been decimated by hunting, poisoning, and trapping in much of their former range.   They are still found in Europe, but only in isolated areas.   These were in a small reserve near the Polish town of Bialowieza.  The snarling animal at upper right looks aggressive, but this is a submissive and defensive display of a subordinate individual.   Wild wolves are common here and we found fresh tracks while walking in nearby forests.
