White-tailed prairie dog        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Several species of prairie dogs (genus Cynomys) inhabit open regions in western North America.   Highly social, they live in colonies called 'towns' that in one species (the black-tailed prairie dog) once covered huge areas.   Populations have declined due to farming and other human activities but they remain abundant in many areas.   This species, the white-tailed prairie dog, has stronger head markings that most Cynomys and lives at higher altitudes than black-tails; these were photographed in northern Colorado.   Pictures of its endangered relative, the Utah prairie dog, are here.
