Weddell seal        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The Weddell seal is a common, deep-diving species that lives farther south than any other mammal. It feeds mainly on large fish caught at depths of up to 600 meters, during dives that can last more than an hour. Despite their large size, Weddells have placid dispositions that match their benign expressions. This one was resting on the sea ice near Palmer Station, Antarctica.
