Tayra        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Tayras (sometimes 'tyra') are cat-sized mustelids -- relatives of weasels, skunks, etc. -- from the Neotropics.   They are agile, partially arboreal, and apparently can be easily tamed.   I photographed this one at about 1500 m altitude along the Manu Road in southeastern Peru.   At the time I was set up for bird photography and could not get far enough away from the animal to get all of it into the frame -- one of the few times in wildlife photography where I wished I had a shorter lens.
