The pronghorn 'antelope' (Antilocapra americana), which is not really an antelope in the classical sense, is nonetheless one of the fastest runners of all mammals, perhaps second only to the iconic cheetah. In fact, it is thought that its tremendous speed is the evolutionary result of long coexistence with a now-extinct North American cheetah species. Male pronghorns have short horns and black markings on the face and neck; females are slightly smaller and lack the black coloration. They are animals of open plains and sagebrush; high-altitude populations often migrate to lower altitudes in winter.
