Platypus        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The strange little platypus is one of the mammalian icons of Australia.   It is so odd that the first specimens sent to Europe were sometimes considered fakes, and it is one of only three extant mammals to lay eggs (the other two are echidnas).  Platypuses are nocturnal and often shy, but they can get used to observers in some places, such as where I photographed this one in Yungaburra in far north Queensland.
