Grevy's zebra        Images © Mark A. Chappell photographs by Mark Chappell

Zebras occur in several species and this is my favorite.   The Grevy's is the largest of the zebras and carries the most elaborate pattern: a network of fine stripes with a clear whitish belly, instead of the normal zebra pattern of heavy stripes .   Grevy's is an arid-country species that is experiencing a serious population decline.   They used to be fairly common in northern Kenya but are now quite scarce.   These are captives, and I decided to focus on their interesting patterns instead of attempting to get a good image of the whole animal.
