Fin whale        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Fin whales are the second largest known animals, after blue whales.   Besides being large, they are variably dark in color with some pale marking on the head, swim rapidly, and -- like blue whales -- seldom lift the flukes when diving.   These were photographed in Monterey Bay, California.
