Desert cottontail        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Desert cottontails are the common small rabbits of southwestern valleys and canyons.   As their name implies they are frequently found in arid areas, but they are also abundant in more mesic habitats.   The bunny in the two pictures at upper left was resting and grooming on a trail at the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area in Riverside, California, the one at upper right was at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California, and the more confiding individuals below were at Big Morongo Reserve in the California desert, and (with tattered ears) near Palm Desert, California.
