Mule deer are common in much of western North America, and I'm a little embarassed that I don't have any really good images of them. The two deer above were photographed in Zion National Park in Utah (doe) and the north rim of the Grand Canyon (male). The picture of the doe is a bit notable because one doesn't often have a chance to get a tightly-framed deer image with a wideangle zoom -- but this one was very confiding with cars (I shot out the passenger window). The group of mule deer below was wintering in Long Valley, near Crowley Lake and the town of Mammoth Lakes, in eastern California. These deer descend from the high snowy mountains in winter to find warmer weather and better food in the nearby valleys. In the background are the peaks of the White Mountains. A much more distant view of a mule deer buck can be seen at upper right on this page. |
