Nine-banded armadillo

This nine-banded armadillo was foraging along the grass road verge on Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge on the east coast of Florida.   Armadilllos are not native to Florida, but they have thrived there.   This one was quite tame and permitted close approach; when touched, it would suddenly leap straight into the air and make soft grunting sounds (very startling to my wife!).
