Uinta chipmunk (Neotamias umbrinus)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chipmunks are an attractive and species-rich group, especially in mountainous regions in the western US and Canada; other species occur in eastern North America and in Eurasia.   All are active, alert, and fast-moving.   Uinta chipmunks are widely distributed in the central Rocky Mountains, usually in conifer forests.   They are medium-sized chipmunks and are hard to distinguish from other chipmunks that share their range.   The pictures were taken in Utah.   Chipmunk species pictured on this site include:

  • Canon 1D4; 800 mm IS lens, some with 1.4X converter and/or extension tubes, fill-in flash (2013)
