Numerous races of wolves (Canus lupus) occur throughout much of the northern hemisphere, although (unfortunately) they have been exterminated in many regions.   The small Mexican race, C. lupus baileyi, was once widespread in the southwestern US and northern Mexico but was nearly wiped out (it was completely extirpated from the US).   Fortunately, it is still hanging on, although mostly in captivity.   A release program is underway in Arizona and New Mexico, but it has not been very successful -- unlike the 1990's reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.  These are captives.
