California vole        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Voles (Microtus) are a large and widely distributed group of rodents in the Northern Hemisphere; sometimes they are called 'field mice'.   This is the California vole, found as its name implies mainly in mesic regions of California, into northern Baja California and southern Oregon.   I photographed this one under a bird feeder on the Monterey Peninsula.
