Thirteen-lined ground squirrel        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The attractive little thirteen-lined ground squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) is common on the great plains of North America.   Like most ground squirrels, it is active during the spring and summer and hibernates during the cold winter.   These were photographed in the Pawnee Grasslands in northeastern Colorado.
