Western pond turtle        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Most of the turtles one sees in California are feral (mainly species from the eastern US), but the western pond turtle (Actinemys marmorata or Emys marmorata) is native.   Many populations are in decline, and I'm not sure if this individual -- photographed at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside -- is a natural occurrence or was released.
