Western fence lizard        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Although they are extremely common throughout much of western North America, I have very few good images of wesern fence lizards.   They aren't as strikingly colored as some of their relatives such as granite spiny lizards and I suppose that to some degree 'familiarity breeds contempt' is operative here.   Small boys frequently catch them and often call them 'bluebellies' because of the bright blue belly coloration on males.   I photographed these in near Riverside, California.
