Eastern water dragon        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Australia has an extremely diverse reptile fauna, and the water dragons are among the most spectacular and interesting.   As their name implies, they are usually found close to streams or ponds, often in rocky areas with access to sunlight for basking.   That is what the individual above is doing, adjacent to a busy residential street in Wombarra, on the coast of New South Wales near Wollongong.   Even though it must have frequently encountered people, it was rather shy and I had to use a long telephoto to get good images. The other water dragon was resting quietly in a pond in the Wollongong Botanical Gardens, a little bit south of Wombarra.
