Speckled rattlesnake        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This southwestern species is fairly common in arid, rocky areas.   It's smaller than some local rattlesnakes (such as the western and red diamondbacks), but makes up for it in its feisty attitude and nervous, easily provoked disposition.  I photographed these near the Deep Canyon research station near Palm Desert, California.
