Greater short-horned lizard        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Greater short-horned lizards (Phrynosoma hernandesi) are one of the 'horned toads' beloved of children.   They were recently split from the short-horned lizard into this species and the pigmy short-horned lizard, P. douglasii.   As a group, the short-horned lizards are among the most widely distributed of all North American lizards.   I took these pictures on the Pawnee Grasslands in northeastern Colorado on a hot summer day.
