Phyllomedusa frog        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Frogs in the Central and South American genus Phyllomedusa live in a variety of habitats. This species, P. sauvagii, is native to the dry thornscrub of Paraguay and Argentina. For a frog, it is remarkably waterproof due to a waxy secretion from specialized skin glands that is smeared over the body with the feet and legs. This waxy material melts at high temperatures, allowing water to evaporate and cool the frog in a mechanism akin to the way humans lose heat by sweating. This picture is of a captive specimen.
