Rubber boa        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Rubber boas are one of two members of the mainly tropical boa family native to the United States.   It is a small, inoffensive snake that lives mainly in burrows and under leaf litter.   This one -- the biggest I've ever seen at about two feet long -- had just finished shedding when I found it basking in morning sun at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab in Mono County, California.   It was amazingly soft, smooth, and gentle.
