Banded rock lizard        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This large lizard has a very restricted range in the US: it occurs only in steep-sided rocky canyons in the Coachella Valley and nearby desert areas.   They spend most of their time clinging to near-vertical rock faces, as in some of these pictures.   I photographed these in Deep Canyon, a University of California research station near Palm Desert, California.   It was hard to get a good picture because of the harsh midday light (these lizards don't seem to come out until the sun is high in the sky).
