Prairie rattlesnake        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) is a medium-sized to large rattlesnake found across a wide range centered in the Great Plains.   They have many common names, and many subspecies.   I photographed this smallish and rather peaceable specimen on the Pawnee Grasslands of northeastern Colorado on a hot summer day..
