Lace monitors are one of the largest of the many species of monitor lizards or goanas (Varanus) found in Australia. They are common in the eucalyptus forests and woodlands of eastern Australia; this one was photographed as it warmed itself in the sun on the trunk of a eucalyptus tree in Wallaby Creek, northern New South Wales.
