Death adder        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Death adders (Acanthophis) are are dangerously venomous Australian snakes that resemble vipers in shape (especially the stout body and broad head) but are elapids (cobra relatives).   This is a small captive specimen; it was easy to photograph because it sat completely still, which is typical for these sit-and-wait predators.   Although it was small I gave it plenty of distance, taking these photos with a long lens.
