Water moccasin        Images © Mark A. Chappell

We found this large and surprisingly placid water moccasin (or 'cottonmouth') crawling across a fairly busy road in the Big Cypress Preserve in south Florida.   With some effort we convinced it to retreat to the safer shrubby growth at the edge of the road.   It shook its tail a bit and briefly gaped, but never gave the famous wide warning yawn that shows the white mouth lining (hence, cottonmouth).
