Banded gecko        Images © Mark A. Chappell /TD>

This common but hard to find nocturnal lizard is a resident of dry, hot desert regions in the s southwestern US.   Some think these harmless little animals mimic scorpions, as they carry their tails curled over their backs as they scurry over the ground.  I photographed this one as it crossed a paved road in the Deep Canyon research station near Palm Desert, California.
