Eastern Sierra near Lone Pine        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Driving to Crowley Lake up Highway 395 on a beautifully clear early spring morning, I was approaching the town of Lone Pine when I noticed the stark contrast between the jagged Sierra peaks and the eroded Alabama Hills in the foreground. This image is a composite created in the computer from five overlapping photos taken with the camera on a tripod with a leveling head. To emphasize the contrast between the land and sky, I used a polarizing filter to darken the latter.
