Glacial erratic        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Glaciers often pick up rocks, move them some distance, and then 'drop' them when they melt or retreat.   Large glacial systems, as occurred during the ice ages, can move rocks very long distances and deposit them in unrelated geological systems.   These oddly-placed rocks are often called 'glacial erratics', and this one is located at Olmsted Point in Yosemite National Park, California.
