Aspen leaves, fall color        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Western North America is not as well known for fall foliage colors as the northeastern part of the continent, but the aspen groves in the Sierra Nevada mountains offer some lovely autumn hues.   Most trees go from green to yellows, golds, and oranges, but a few get bright red, particularly when backlit.   Sometimes a bit of fresh snow or frost adds to the charm.   Many photographers travel to the eastern Sierra in early October for this event -- so many that some of the popular sites can get uncomfortably crowded.   Most of these photos were made in the upper Bishop Creek area, near North Lake and Lake Sabrina; others were shot near McGee Creek, Convict Creek, or Lundy Canyon a bit farther north.   More autumn aspen images from the eastern Sierra are here.
