Chrysothamnus at Mono Lake        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chrysothamnus nauseosus, also called rabbitbrush, is a very common plant in the arid scrublands on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains.   It is beloved by landscape photographers because it blossoms very late in the season (these images were made in October) and adds some color to landscapes that -- while dramatic -- can be a bit drab.   I took these photos on a cloudy morning from a hill overlooking Mono Lake to the east, using a graduated neutral-density filter to soften the contrast between the dark foreground and the bright sky.
