Common yellowthroat        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The common yellowthroat is a familiar (if a bit secretive) resident in marshes, swamps, and wet grassy fields.   Males (like this one) are brilliant yellow underneath with a striking white-fringed black mask; females are a subtle olive-yellow color.   This unusually cooperative male was defending a territory at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area east of Riverside, California.
