Rusty blackbird        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Rusty blackbirds are scarce in California; they breed in boreal and Arctic regions and winter in the southeastern United States.   Populations apparently are in rapid decline, for unknown reasons.   This vagrant female -- or possibly a juvenile male -- was photographed on a tiny stream in the desert near Thousand Palms, in the Coachella Valley of southern California.
