Northern parula        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Northern parulas are small, active, colorful little birds of forests.   They are native to the eastern US, but there are a few isolated breeding records from the west coast.   This male (females have slightly less contrasty head markings) was foraging and singing in early July in riparian forest a bit north of Manhattan, Kansas.
