Varied bunting        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like the closely related lazuli and painted buntings, a male varied bunting is a spectacularly colorful bird in good light.   Females of all three species are greenish brown.  In the US, varied buntings are mainly found in southern Arizona.   These birds were photographed in Madera Canyon in southeastern Arizona, and in nearby Box Canyon.   At the latter site, three males were fighting among themselves for territory, permitting unusually close approach.
