Song sparrow (rufous morph)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The song sparrow is a familiar resident across much of North America, occuring in a wide variety of races.   There is considerable color variation, and these very rusty-reddish birds are characteristic of song sparrows in the Salton Sea area in southeastern California (where I photographed thse birds); the second-to-last images is from the west side of the Sea, where the song sparrows are not as reddish.   Pictures of other song sparrows are here.
