Scarlet rosefinch        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Scarlet rosefinches remind me a bit of the house finch and purple finch of North America. Rosefinches are a Eurasian genus and this species is native to Europe and parts of Asia.   As is often the case in birds, the female is more modestly colored than the male (one of these images shows a female; in general the males were much more tolerant of approach).   These birds were photographed near Bialowieza in eastern Poland.
