Gray-crowned rosy-finch        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The rosy finches are one of the groups which were originally classified as several speces, then lumped into one, and then, more recently, split again.   Gray-crowned rosy-finches are the northernmost of the three species (although they also breed farther south than brown-capped and black rosy finches).   These two wintering birds (male at left, female at right) were photographed in Homer, Alaska.
