Red-eared firetail        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Australia has a number of lovely estrelid finches, including several firetail species.   Many are arid-country dwellers but some, including the red-eared firetail from the southwest, also live in forests or brushlands.   Most firetails have very intricately-patterned plumage with red rumps and some red elsewere, such as these red-eared firetails. I photographed them in Western Australia, near Albany.
