Clay-colored sparrow        Images © Mark A. Chappell

In most of California, clay-colored sparrows are unusual winter and spring vagrants (their main range is in central Canada and the northern Great Plains in summer, and in Texas, Mexico, and the southeastern US in winter).   I photographed these in Morongo Valley in the southern California desert, on the Konza Prairie in Kansas, and in Monterey, California.
