Chestnut-collared longsupr        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Chestnut-collared longspurs are colorful prairie birds, related to the similar Lapland longspur and the dissimilar McCown's and Smith's longspur.  As with other longspurs, there is considerable sexual dimorphism (the female is cryptic and brownish).   I photographed these birds at Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Montana.
