I photographed these male cardinals in South Texas (above) and in southeastern Arizona (below).   The bird at upper left was sitting quietly in a bush on a drizzly day in Perdenales State Park, north of San Antonio. The bird on the left above, and several others, were in the Rio Grande Valley.   The male and female immediately below (middle and right) were in desert scrub near Cave Creek Canyon in the Chiracahua Mountains.
