White-winged crossbill        Images © Mark A. Chappell

White-winged crossbills live in northern boreal forests and are uncommon south of the Canadian border.   Like their relative the red crossbill, white-wings are nomadic and unpredictable, possibly because of their dependance on conifer seeds.   These two (male at left, female at right) were photographed as they came to feed on mineral-rich soil near Willow, Alaska.
