Patagonian sierra-finch; Chilean name Cometocino patagónico        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The sierra-finches are a group of South American birds that are typically associated with mountainous regions, as their name suggests.   We found two species in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in southern Chile, the Patagonian sierra finch shown here and the very similar gray-hooded sierra-finch, which has a slightly less colorful back.
