White-breasted nuthatch        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like their close relative the red-breasted nuthatch, this species has a very characteristic nasal call.   It is common in forest and woodland throughout much of North America; the male at lower right was attending a feeder at the James Reserve in the San Jacinto Mountains of southern California.   The other birds were in southeastern Arizona.
