Stonechat        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like its close relative the winchat, the stonechat is a small, alert, short-tailed bird of open meadows.   It has the same colors as the winchat -- black, white, rust-red, and brownish for adult males; plain brownish for females -- but in a slightly different pattern.   Although they prefer to sit on prominent perches, both species are quite shy and difficult to approach and this individual was no exception.   Most of these shots are heavily cropped from the original, but at least I was able to catch one of the birds against a purple background of blurred thistles in a couple of shots.   The photos were taken in Bialowieza, Poland.
