Skylark        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The skylark is a common bird of meadows and grasslands in much of Europe.   It has a modest crest but is otherwise a plain brownish, rather inconspicuous, and quite shy bird -- until it takes to the air in its courtship and territorial display.   They flutter up into the sky, singing a lovely bubbling song all the while, hanging in the air for several minutes before slowly 'parachuting' back to the ground.   Occasionally two birds (I assume males) will engage in a territorial squabble high in the air (below, right).   I found skylarks very hard to photograph because they were usually either very high (and out of range) or moving rapidly, and sitting birds were extremely wary.   These were photographed in meadows in Bialowieza, Poland.
