Purple martin        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Purple martins are large, colonial swallows that are much appreciated for their pretty plumage and large appetite for flying insects.   In the eastern US they frequently nest in martin 'houses' put up by people to attract these birds.   These males (glittering blue) and females were photographed during spring migration near Riverside, CA; the female/winter bird was in Pacific Grove, CA.   One is being hassled by a Cassin's kingbird.
