Pigmy nuthatch        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Pigmy nuthatches are small, hyperactive, noisy little birds -- one of my favorites -- that remind me of small penguins because of their white bellies, big feet, and stubby tails.   They usually travel in flocks, often with warblers, kinglets, and chickadees, and are common in coniferous forests in western North America.   Most of these were photographed on ponderosa pines in the San Jacinto Mountains; others while they foraged on an oak tree in Pebble Beach, both in California.
